The Mars Society’s Red Planet Live podcast is pleased to announce that Dr. Marcia Rieke, a senior investigator for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope currently in orbit above the Earth, will join the show on Tuesday, June 20th (5:00 pm PT / 8:00 pm ET) to talk about astronomy, the search for exoplanets, and other issues related to deep space exploration.
Dr. Rieke is a Regents Professor of Astronomy at the University of Arizona, with research interests including infrared observations of the center of the Milky Way and of other galactic nuclei and observation of the infrared sky at as faint a level as possible to study distant galaxies. These areas of interest have driven her to characterize and develop large-format, low-noise infrared detector arrays.
She has served as the Deputy Principal Investigator on NICMOS, (the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer for the Hubble Space Telescope), the Outreach Coordinator for the Spitzer Space Telescope, and is now the Principal Investigator for the James Webb Space Telescope’s near-infrared camera (NIRCam). In addition, Dr. Rieke is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and was recently named the Professor Elizabeth Roemer Endowed Chair in Astronomy.
