Red Planet Live to Welcome JWST’s Marcia Rieke to Discuss Astronomy & Answer Questions

The Mars Society’s Red Planet Live podcast is pleased to announce that Dr. Marcia Rieke, a senior investigator for NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope currently in orbit above the Earth, will join the show on Tuesday, June 20th (5:00 pm PT / 8:00 pm ET) to talk about astronomy, the search for exoplanets, and other issues related to deep space exploration.

Dr. Rieke is a Regents Professor of Astronomy at the University of Arizona, with research interests including infrared observations of the center of the Milky Way and of other galactic nuclei and observation of the infrared sky at as faint a level as possible to study distant galaxies. These areas of interest have driven her to characterize and develop large-format, low-noise infrared detector arrays.

She has served as the Deputy Principal Investigator on NICMOS, (the Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer for the Hubble Space Telescope), the Outreach Coordinator for the Spitzer Space Telescope, and is now the Principal Investigator for the James Webb Space Telescope’s near-infrared camera (NIRCam). In addition, Dr. Rieke is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and was recently named the Professor Elizabeth Roemer Endowed Chair in Astronomy.

To join the RPL podcast (free of charge), please register online. You are invited to submit your questions to Dr. Rieke during the program. She will be ready to answer anything James Webb Space Telescope related, having spent 30+ years working in astronomy and using orbiting space telescope projects.

Red Planet Live is a monthly live one-hour podcast from The Mars Society–Ashton Zeth interviews the people instrumental in exploring and settling Mars. The show will focus on a wide variety of topics, including Mars and space exploration, STEM education, technology, women in science, and much more, with exciting and open discussions involving experts in these respective fields.
