Commander's Report
Boris Yim Reporting
Our 2nd simulation day on Mars. Weather is still fine with slight rain in the evening. We now have no plan to fix the upper floor heating since the lower floor heating is acceptable and more time can be spent on valuable studies. Perhaps the refit after the season can fix this non-trivial problem. More EVAs are planned today. We improved our preparation for EVA and added our mandatory personal hydration system (water pack with a tube). EVA suit 3 was taken out without disconnecting the power cord, so it broke, but later soldered back and reinforced.
In EVA 3, we practiced our first outdoor repair. All essential tools were brought along. We took down the Hab door support wheel, drilled 2 holes in the metal wheel support with ATV oil, and adjusted the position of the wheel. The door closes fine now but get harder to open. Another repair method was suggested. Repair crew came back sweaty and tired.
EVA 4 had to wait for the repair to finish so that they can use the airlock. We practiced the sterilized sample collection procedure for the RSL project. It worked out fine and the procedure was documented. We can go ahead to collect halophile samples later.
EVA 5 had to wait for the charging of GPS device. We had great fun driving ATVs and doing various things like radio range test by GPS, going to certain waypoints and other interesting photography.
When we turned on the oven for baking potatoes for dinner, the lamp flickered. The power system was examined and confirmed it was due to high power usage by the oven (or low power capacity of the power system). Cooking by gas was used instead. There was also an unknown burnt smell in the attic. Everyone will have experienced a navy shower in MDRS today, after 3 days stay.
