EVA Report
Chris Ostafew Reporting
EVA #10 Report
Time:
Departed at 10:33 - Returned at 16:15
Departed: 14:32pm - Returned: 16:32pm
Crew Members:
Randall Shelaga, Cassandra Marion, Heather Allaway, Aravind Seeni, Guy
de Carufel, Philip Cunio, Chris Ostafew
Site Location:
Coal Mine Wash
Transit Mode:
Pressurized EVA-mobile
Objectives:
Cass and Randy decided today (bright, sunny and somewhat cool in the
shade) would be a great day to further our knowledge of geologic
activity while learning of the implementation of FDM (Field Documentation Methodology) techniques. The entire crew piled into the new V'ger (a
rental van) and zoomed across the countryside to Coal Mine Wash.
Lessons Learned:
The crew, including the engineers, are now familiarized with FDM such
that should the scientists desire days off, data collection for their
projects can go on. Further, the remote scientists can now rest
assured that even though they may not be present during data
collection, relevant information such as location, elevation, PAN
views, horizon shots and notable site features will all be included
along with more info surrounding actual sample sites. Thankfully, FDM
was found to be relatively full of common sense and also has a little
cheat sheet including scale and color references.
We also had another geology lesson, this time focusing on the
documentation of stratographic columns. Our sample column was
primarily composed of cross bedding, a sedimentary formation
characteristic of ever moving beach dunes. The crew learned effective
tools for field documentation and some of the most common descriptors
for the columns.
